About the Artist
Inge Schiöler (1908–1971) was born in Strömstad on the west coast of Sweden. He studied in Gothenburg, first at the Arts and Crafts Association College and then in 1926–8 at Valand. His first solo exhibition was at Svensk-franska konstgalleriet (the Swedish–French Art Gallery) in Stockholm in 1932. In both his figurative and landscape paintings, he soon adopted a powerful, colourful Expressionism. Schiöler began to suffer from mental illness in 1933, and was treated at the S:t Jörgen Hospital in Gothenburg for several decades. While in hospital, he was periodically uninterested in art, but he resumed painting in 1942 with the same Colouristic originality and mastery as before. His motifs now revolved around the Bohuslän archipelago and floral still lifes. Schiöler was finally discharged from hospital in 1960, and he remained active as an artist until his death.
