The Fürstenberg Gallery (I) (Room 16)

The Fürstenberg Gallery offers a rich insight into Nordic art from the 1880s and 1890s, showcasing significant works that illustrate the artistic transformations of the period. The married couple Pontus and Göthilda Fürstenberg lived in Gothenburg and built their collection in their home at Brunnsparken. Today, their collection is displayed in these rooms and consists largely of works by “The Opponents”, a group of artists inspired by the new French outdoor painting and impressionism. Both movements emphasized painting directly from nature, in front of the subject. Göthilda and Pontus also acquired French works and contemporary art from across the Nordic countries. In 1902, the couple bequeathed their collection to the Gothenburg Museum, where it was presented as a separate section. It was later transferred to the newly constructed Gothenburg Museum of Art at Götaplatsen.
