Description
From the research project “The Canon: Perspectives on Swedish Art Historiography”, 2021: The name Axel L. Romdahl (1880–1951) is intimately tied to the Gothenburg Museum of Art, where he was curator 1906–1947. It is fair to say that Romdahl practically created the museum, considering its development under his leadership, not least thanks to his close collaborations with donors, which made it possible to assemble an outstanding collection of both historical and modern art. The project investigates how he valued different epochs, styles and artists. Here can be seen the modernist Helmer Osslund’s portrait of Romdahl. It is a lively portrait of a professional in the middle of his career, executed with a fluid technique in warm colours.
