Description
From the book “The Collection: The Gothenburg Museum of Art”, Gothenburg 2014: The eponymous hill rises over the rolling green countryside, its rocky profile hard against the blue-green sky and the wisps of pink cloud drifting across the horizon. A crescent moon shines dimly in the sky, and the evening light saturates the colours. The dark brownish green foreground, where a couple of solitary pines break in, frame the panorama. Below, the rolling farmland with its green fields and leafy woods. Hartippen itself has been painted with a rough hand in red ochre with violet shadows. The artist has simplified the motif in his quest for rhythm and impact of form. The visible brushstrokes emphasize the movement in the image, contributing to its expressive effect. It may not be as dark or portentous as some of his canvases from the Varberg period, but the influence of Synthetism, Gauguin, and Van Gogh is still tangible. Kristoffer Arvidsson
