From the book “The Collection: The Gothenburg Museum of Art”, Gothenburg 2014: Two gnarled trees dominate the foreground which is in shadow, while the tree canopies are ablaze in the last rays of the setting sun. The viewer is led into the picture along a road that runs between the trees to a crossroads. Beyond the trees, the sun-drenched Halland coast stretches out before the viewer. The evening light makes the heath running down to the sea glow in intense colours and gives the scene an enchanted air. A balancing of opposites that reinforce and complement each other is something that is often found in Richard Bergh’s work. He frequently mirrors human figures in anthropomorphized trees.
