Description
The work The Verger is painted in an academic style which is somewhat uncharacteristic of Carl Larsson.
The job of a verger was to wake up church goers who had fallen asleep during the priest’s homily. Carl Larsson portrays the verger as a dour man who takes his job most seriously, gazing severely past the viewer, with clenched fists, sporting a bright red costume.
Signature/Inscription
Inscriptions (a tergo, gömd under dubbleringsduk): Konstaterad å Nationalmuseum. Målad af C. Larsson. Finnes även etsad af Larsson och är afbildad och beskriven i Romdahls bok om Larsson. Även annat intyg finns bifogat till målningen utfärdat av Karin Larsson. Det lyder sålunda "Att oljemålningen enligt ovanstående skiss, storlek 97x65 cm, är målad av min aflidne man Carl Larsson intygas härmed Sundborn den 13 Juli 1922".
