Description
Primarily associated with 1870s landscape painting, Wilhelm von Gegerfelt’s extensive oeuvre also includes several lyrical depictions of Venice and its quays.
In these paintings von Gegerfelt has abandoned the darker Düsseldorf painting for an impressionist-influenced colourist painting inspired by the lagoon city’s architecture and street life. In the early 1880s von Gegerfelt made several visits to Venice, including some in the company of fellow artists Carl Skånberg and George Pauli.
