Description
In his later painting, Hans Fredrik Gude moved from mountains and wilderness to coastal and marine motifs. However, 1880s realism, which focused on people and everyday events, never made any inroads in Gude’s work. The watercolour Homebound Fishing Boats, 1882, with motifs from Ahlbeck on the German Baltic coast depicts the hard life of the fishing community, but despite the realism there is a lingering romantic tone in the painting.
