Description
In France, Bruno Liljefors saw and was inspired by Japanese woodblock printing. His elegant, precise paintings of the latter part of the 1880s were also influenced by Japanese art. The images are boldly cropped and the central motif is often depicted in detailed realism while the surroundings and the background are more blurry. The work Partridges; Willow-warbler and Butterfly; Snipe with Chicks; Magpies in an Apple Tree; Cat with Caught Bird, from 1888, is composed of five paintings joined together in a gilt frame. In the 1880s Liljefors made some works in which several paintings were mounted in a single frame in this manner. The idea to combine mutually unrelated images in a single frame appears in Japanese woodblock printing of the type known as Harimaze, in which different motifs were printed on paper, then cut up and glued onto screens or other objects.
