Description
Bruno Liljefors was fascinated by the fox in its capacity of an intelligent and agile predator. In Kvarnbo outside Uppsala, where the artist had his studio in the 1880s,
he collected a menagerie of wild animals. Some were kept in cages while others roamed about freely. Liljefors thus kept the models for his paintings in his own zoo which included owls, wood grouse, grey partridges, pine martens, foxes and dabbling ducks. In this painting, however, the fox is the hunted one.
