Description
The coastal landscape was executed in the summer of 1893 when Olof Sager-Nelson painted in Marstrand, supported by patron Pontus Fürstenberg and living at Gustaf Werner’s house. Largely naturalistic with a touch of impressionism, the painting skilfully captures the bright sunshine, the sunlit clouds and the reflections on the water. The painting also displays a tendency towards a stricter geometric composition in the spirit of synthe-tism, with the windmill and the jetty indicating the directions in the picture. During his time in Stockholm, Sager-Nelson met Ivan Aguéli who was familiar with the new continental art movements. Financially supported by Fürstenberg, in September 1893 Sager-Nelson travelled to Paris where he made his most famous works: the symbolic portraits in a viridescent range of colours. His career was cut short by illness. He contracted tuberculosis and died at the age of 28 in Biskra, Algeria.
