Description
Anders Zorn was born as the illegitimate son of a German master brewer and a woman who had left Mora to work in a brewery in Uppsala. As an artist Zorn had an astonishing international career and was a celebrated portraitist of high society. Among other things, he painted several American presidents. After many years abroad, Zorn returned to Dalarna in the 1890s and settled permanently in Mora. He became interested in local popular traditions which he depicted in his art. In this work he has painted a Dales woman playing the lute. The painting was probably made in Zorn’s studio or in his house. In the background there is a wooden panel. The girl in the red costume is looking up, thoughtfully, listening to the music. The light and facile style of painting is typical of Zorn. Quick brush strokes capture the way the garments fall and the light reflections on the cheek, the forehand and the bridge of the nose.
