Description
The most celebrated of the Swedish Düsseldorf artists was Marcus Larson. Born in Åtvidaberg, the son of a farmer, he moved to Stockholm where he trained as a saddle-maker while attending evening classes at the Art Academy. His skill as a marine painter was recognised early and in the beginning of the 1850s he moved to Düsseldorf where he quickly became popular. Marcus Larson led a self-destructive lifestyle, but achieved great success in Europe during his brief career.
