Description
Berndt Lindholm was born in Finland and moved to Sweden and Gothenburg in 1875 where he carried out several assignments for Gothenburg’s museums. Among other things, he was the director of the drawing school, the curator of the art department and the secretary of the art museum’s acquisitions committee. However, first and foremost Lindholm was an artist. He studied in Düsseldorf, was an accomplished en plein air painter and was part of the first generation of Nordic landscape painters in Paris in the 1870s. After returning to Scandinavia, Berndt Lindholm applied the knowledge gained on the continent and captured the character of the Nordic countryside in a natural manner. In the intimate landscape painting Woodland at a Lake from 1896, he combined illusory rendered details, which was cherished in Düsseldorf, with bright daylight in the French spirit.
