Description
Animals are a given motif for anyone looking around for something to turn into art; man’s best friend or an invaluable source of food and livelihood. The love that some images of animals convey is striking. For a person who has never travelled further than the closest town, it is hard to imagine a different world from one’s own. However, as overseas trade increased, combined with the speedy reproduction of images, Europe suddenly became aware of many exotic animals – some of which were depicted in a highly creative way.
Imagine seeing a picture of an animal that you probably never will see with your own eyes. The demand for such images was at times greater than the desire to render the animals correctly.
