Description
The Convalescent is a lithograph with a motif after a famous painting by the artist from 1888, made several decades later. The model is an oil painting in the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki, created during Helene Schjerfbeck’s time in St Ives in Cornwall. The painting was exhibited at the Salon in Paris under the title Première verdure, the first greenery. Schjerfbeck returned to the motif several times in different versions. Here she takes up a popular motif in art at the time, the sick girl, which was also painted by Ernst Josephson, Edvard Munch, Jenny Nyström and others. The impressionistic light and depth of the original painting is replaced in the lithograph by a sketchy representation with quick contour lines and clean surfaces, where the black sweater contrasts with the blond hair and the delicate yellow flowers in the cup in front of the little girl.
