Description
From the book “The Collection: The Gothenburg Museum of Art”, Gothenburg 2014: Andy Warhol’s single most famous image is the portrait of Marilyn Monroe from 1964. In Marilyn Monroe, he found a fusion of the two themes he had so often worked with in his art: fame and people’s desire to be seen, and on the other side, death. The film star had died in 1962, only 36 years old, and in the two years that followed Warhol produced a series of thirty screen-prints in different colours, all from the same original—a still from the movie Niagara from 1953. He would later return to the motif. The Gothenburg Museum of Art’s four pictures date from 1967, and are part of a series of ten pictures. Per Dahlström
