Description
Marcantonio Raimondi is one of the most famous Italian engravers, particularly well known for his collaborations with the Renaissance master Raphael in the early 16th century.
The Judgment of Paris is among the most talked about works in art history. Like several other prints by Raimondi, it is based on a drawing by Raphael.
Raimondi was gifted in transferring the expressions of other artists to prints, but another reason he copied the works of other printmakers, such as Dürer, was to learn new techniques.
Raimondi was a pioneer in collaborating with other artists. In Northern Europe, engravers specialised in interpreting the works of other artists did not emerge until the mid-16th century. The primary function of these collaborations was to give artists the opportunity to spread their works and enhance their reputation.
