Description
From an early stage in his career, Rembrandt was interested in etching as a form of expression, and over the years he continued to experiment with the technique. He used many different materials for his prints and was a forerunner in the use of Japanese paper. Many of the themes that characterise his painting are also found in his etchings, not least the interplay between light and darkness. Here, the gaze of the viewer is caught by the burning flame, only to slowly discover the rest of the subject matter. The result is an intimate and moving scene, in which we are invited to enter the private sphere of the depicted person.
