Description
Dürer’s depiction, with an explanatory text, was the most widely seen, spread and copied image of a rhinoceros during the 16th–18th centuries. This version is by Enea Vico.
Dürer claimed that the rhinoceros hones its horn on rocks to keep it sharp, and that elephants and rhinoceroses are mortal enemies. In battle, however, the rhinoceros wins easily, since it is shorter and has a horn that rips up the belly of its opponent!
