Description
Against the backdrop of the Thirty Years’ War, Jacques Callot created one of his foremost works, the suite Les grandes misères de la Guerre (The Miseries of War).
In eighteen etchings, he shows the consequences of immoral and criminal conduct in the military ranks. Executed soldiers are shown hanging from a tree, and a village is plundered and torched. The etchings express both the vulnerability of the civilians and the punishment that awaits soldiers who misbehave.
Callot worked exclusively as an etcher, and his small format works are characterised by amazingly rich detail. The suite was originally put on the market and sold in Paris in the form of pamphlets containing all eighteen etchings.
