A man is standing to read a prayer over the body. In the following boats the passengers are singing. The landscape rises along the fjord’s flanks and in the background it is possible to make out a tall mountain peak in the haze. In the centre of the painting, the sun is breaking through. All is quiet, but the approaching storm creates a forbidding atmosphere. Humans are subject to the whims of Nature; human life is fragile and short in comparison with the surrounding landscape.
