Running Water shows a dark river with sunlight playing on the flowing water. Trees outside the image are reflected in the water, whose eddying currents create a meditative, almost spellbinding atmosphere. This is a decorative composition, with delicate shifts in values that call to mind both Art Nouveau and Japanese art. During his time as Bruno Liljefors’s pupil, Fjæstad had studied Japanese woodcuts, which in the late nineteenth century had taken Europe by storm and had a lasting effect on many artists.
