Description
In The Farmer’s Daughter (1902) Wilhelmson demonstrates his mastery as a painter of light and interpreter of mood and facial expression. A young woman in a long, dark dress is seated in a chair, straight-backed and arms crossed, in a furnished room. Some rag-rugs are laid out across the floor, drawing the perspective lines that emphasize the depth of the image. It is a hot summer’s day. Through the window in the room beyond the viewer glimpses a landscape bathed in strong sunlight. The woman’s disproportionately large hands stand out against the dark fabric. Her hair is scraped back. Her facial expression is serious and she is looking straight ahead, but without meeting our gaze. She gives an impression of determination and calm self-possession.
The painting was done in Värmland in the summer of 1902 on the farm belonging to the Sahlström family in Utterbyn, just outside the village of Torsby, where Wilhelmson spent two periods around the turn of the last century. The model was Anna Sahlström, daughter of the wealthy farmer and member of parliament Per Sahlström. Wilhelmson had met the Sahlströms through one of the sons, Bror Sahlström, a sculptor whom he had known in Paris in the 1890s, and who in 1900 had invited Wilhelmson to stay at the farm. In addition to Bror and his brother Otto, the Sahlströms had three daughters, Johanna, Anna, and Ida. Anna became a painter and wood engraver, Ida a textile artist. The authoritarian Per Sahlström did not look kindly on his children’s interest in art, but that did not prevent them from pursuing it. In the portrait, Anna exudes the self-awareness and resolve she would have needed to stick to a difficult career choice.
