Description
Village Street, Vétheuil shows a French village on a grey winter’s day. The viewer is led into the village along the street, which is seen in perspective. To the left the ground rises steeply, while the landscape opens up to the right. Houses of various shapes are grouped along the road; a tower-like brick building up on the left, and whitewashed houses with chimneys at street level. Behind the houses, the ground rises into a snow-covered hill shrouded in grey mist. The street is muddy and icy. Snow lies in patches on the brown ground. Despite the chilly winter atmosphere, Monet’s skill at creating depth and space with colour still imbues the painting with a strong sense of light and air. Village Street, Vétheuil was painted at a traumatic time in Monet’s life. Pregnant with their second child, his wife Camille Doncieux’s already poor health worsened. The baby survived, but Camille died of tuberculosis in September 1879—Monet painted her on her deathbed. After several months of mourning, he launched himself into a new, immensely productive period, painting French landscapes and beach motifs. This culminated in a series of paintings in which one motif was presented in a number of different lights. In Vétheuil alone, where he lived until 1881, he painted about 150 canvases.
