With graceful lines and colours that flow from white and red to black, blue, green, and gold, Ernst Josephson fleshes out an imaginary picture of a theatre. Josephson, whose uncle Ludvig Josephson was a director and impresario, revisited the world of the theatre in this picture from his years of mental illness. The woman is wearing makeup with red lipstick, has flowing golden locks, and is elegantly dressed in feathered pillbox hat, gloves, and feather boa, and a low-cut dress that emphasizes her cleavage. An elegant lady who is also the object of erotic desire. The lines are tentative and meandering, yet the colour has been freely and expressively applied in this large watercolour, painted in about 1893.
