Swedish Modernism (Room 23)

From the late 1910s onward, a distinct tradition of naïve art emerged in Europe. Naïve art took inspiration from the perceived authenticity and spontaneity of self taught artists. It became an important artistic current well into the mid 20th century. Many artists explored motifs from the outskirts of cities, though glimpses of growing urban centres and industrial areas often appear in the background. This period also saw the rise of several influential women artists. In this room, you will encounter works by painters such as Vera Nilsson, Siri Derkert and Bror Hjorth.
