About the Artist
With a total production of around 2 700 etchings, Wenceslaus Hollar ranks as one of the most skilled and productive printmakers of the 17th century. Hollar was born in Bohemia, but worked chiefly in Germany, England and the Netherlands. One of his most talked about series of prints consists of city views of London before and after the great fire of 1666. Along with portraits, landscapes, still lifes, heraldry, marine scenes and religious motifs, he also carried out illustrations for books, for instance a costume book, showing how women dressed in different parts of the world in 1662.
