Description
Thanks to the affordable medium, artists were liberated from a heavy burden on their income and gained greater personal freedom of expression. As yet, there was no leading style that dictated prints, so artists working in the 15th–17th centuries could experiment with relatively few restrictions.
There was a will to achieve an extreme degree of realism, and many different forms of expression appeared. In the study of a muff we come across free linework that is almost reminiscent of sketches from the modern period. At times the expression is so near the present age that we can cross mental barriers in time and space, allowing ourselves to conjure up a long-gone era.
