Description
Alexander Roslin had an outstanding international career as a portrait painter and is one of the most successful Swedish born artists ever. Roslin came to Paris in a time of transition between rococo and neo-classicism, and manoeuvred skilfully between the two styles, depending on who was the client. He was admired especially for his skill in reproducing different materials like silk and velvet. Double Portrait, in the Gothenburg Museum of Art, depicts an unknown couple. There are different theories about who they are, but none of them have been confirmed. One theory says that the couple is architect and engineer Jean-Rodolphe Perronet (1708–1794) and his wife.
